What We Do
The health of the Pacific Ocean is under threat. In addition to the impacts of climate change, the Pacific Ocean is at risk from over-fishing, biodiversity loss, and pollution, all driven by commercial and population pressures. Without careful management and intensified cooperation between the Pacific Islands and their international partners, the health of the Pacific Ocean will continue to decline. Urgent and sustained global action is needed to address the threats posed by climate change and sea-level rise. P2P’s initiatives are designed to address the climate crisis by aligning with like-minded organizations to tackle climate adaptation head-on.
Indigenous Climate Adaptation Scholar Program
In 2019 P2P's Indigenous Climate Adaptation Scholar Program, was created in partnership with College of the Atlantic (COA).
Our theory of change is that education in environmental science and diplomacy will enable indigenous people to acquire the skills to be self-sufficient when it comes to solutions. MORE
Our Programs
Heat Resistant Coral
P2P co-founder and chair Dr. Stone has led a 20-year research program in the Phoenix Islands resulting in the establishment of the Phoenix Islands Protected Area and the discovery of heat-resistant corals. Our plan is to create nurseries to grow seedlings and assess the safe transplanting of these corals to regions that are rapidly deteriorating because they do not have heat resistance built into their genetic code. 4IR Oceanography.
Another area of development that has occurred in the last year is what we call 4IR Oceanography. This is based on the need to disrupt conventions in ocean science and to create exponential changes to the way we live, work, and relate to our ocean and to have a better understanding of its systems. P2P Media Outreach Program.
2020 was an exciting year for our Media Outreach Program. Our cornerstone of the program is the podcast “The Sea Has Many Voices”, hosted by the foundation’s co-founder, Dr. Greg Stone. This year we had a series of prominent and passionate leaders in ocean conservation and engaged our audience with perspectives from names like Jared Diamond, Ian Somerhalder, Philippe Cousteau, Kelly Slater, and Dr. Larry Madin. P2P Expeditions
P2P is a “wet” organization, meaning we are most comfortable and productive in, under, and on the water. We conduct expeditions/sojourns with partners, donors, and other interested parties forming small teams of citizen scientists. MORE
Global Pathways
Every day there are approximately 70,000 ocean-going ships on the water ranging from oil tankers, freighters, cargo ships, ferries, and more. Many scientists have wondered how these ships could cost-effectively collect information about the health of the ocean during the course of their normal business. MORE
